Title: South Africa Development Programme
Funded by: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), New Zealand
Delivered by: NZAGRC, AgriServ Ltd.
The next phase of work in South Africa is to complement improved inventory management with improved accuracy of emission estimates by collecting local data on agricultural emissions, especially enteric methane from farmed livestock. In addition, synergies are envisaged with Southern Africa’s push to improve livestock production efficiency and capitalise on forages that offer environmental (including land degradation) and productivity gains. The establishment of a GHG measurement hub at the University of Pretoria will continue to build expertise and collaborative networks, expanding local and regional capabilities. The activities in this project will improve Southern Africa's livestock GHG inventories through:
• Measurement of Ym values for feedstuffs and forages that represent the principal feed sources for ruminants in the major livestock systems and regions as identified in inventory structures.
• Measurement of GHG emissions for regional manure management systems
• Consolidation of existing analyses and obtaining new diet analyses that will allow DMI estimation of the principal livestock feed in Southern Africa by stock of known liveweight.
• Evaluation of the efficacy of leguminous shrubs and browse in improving diet quality, animal performance and reducing emissions intensity in grazing systems.
