Lao PDR

Projects

Title: Capacity development for livestock GHG emission quantification and management in Lao PDR

Funded by: Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), New Zealand

Delivered by: NZAGRC, AgriServ Ltd.

This project aims to enable government livestock agencies and other sector stakeholders to identify, plan and implement measures that meet national objectives for livestock development and GHG mitigation in line with Lao PDR’s NDC. A revised Tier 1 inventory of GHG emissions from livestock (all species) has been compiled. Tier 2 inventories of GHG emissions from cattle and pigs will be compiled using available information supplemented by household and farm survey data. Gross energy intake of pigs and cattle methane emissions from different diets will be measured in experiments conducted by NAFRI and NUoL. The Tier 2 inventory will be used to assess GHG mitigation options and potential in line with Lao PDR’s NDC. MRV systems for monitoring and reporting GHG emission reductions from livestock sector interventions will be designed.

Organisations receiving support: Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI); Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos (NUoL).

Dates: Ongoing (2022 - 2025)

Project focus areas: Reporting, Foundation of GHG Inventories (includes capability building in institutional arrangements, cross cutting issues, use of IPCC guidelines), National Determined Contributions, Research & Development (includes developing country specific emission factors), Data collection/improvement.
